Cactus: Issues for Sustainable Simulation Software
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Cactus Framework is an open-source, modular, portable programming environment for the collaborative development and deployment of scientific applications using high-performance computing. Its roots reach back to 1996 at the National Center for Supercomputer Applications and the Albert Einstein Institute in Germany, where its development jumpstarted. Since then, the Cactus framework has witnessed major changes in hardware infrastructure as well as its own community. This paper describes its endurance through these past changes and, drawing upon lessons from its past, also discusses future challenges for Cactus.

Cactus Application: Performance Predictions in Grid Environments
The Cactus software is representative for a whole class of scientific applications; typically those that are tightly coupled, have regular space decomposition, and huge memory and processor time requirements. Cactus proved to be a valuable tool for astrophysicists, who first initiated its development. However, today’s fastest supercomputers are not powerful enough to perform realistically large...

متن کاملModeling and Simulation for Sustainable Manufacturing
With increasing frequency the news media reports that the planet is warming, pollutants are contaminating the environment, energy costs are rising, and precious natural resources are dwindling. These reports are sounding an alarm that we need to change the way we manufacture products so as to minimize the negative impact of industrial operations on the environment, the workforce, and the surrou...
متن کاملApplying Life Cycle Assessment within Discrete Event Simulation
This paper reveals the experiences of the application of a software tool that combines discrete event simulation (DES), material flow analysis (MFA) and life cycle assessment (LCA) in a single simulation model. This view focuses not only on economic optimization but also on material flow analysis opening the door to sustainable production in the future. Thus, the software unifies the economic a...
متن کاملIntegrating Cactus Simulations within Triana Workflows
In this paper, we give a status report for an architecture that can be used to view or analyse the output of scientific applications within secure distributed environments. The model satisfies essential criteria for such an environment, such as traversing firewall issues, by constructing a one-way protocol for communication to clients wishing to view the progress of such an application. Our pro...
